The War Archive emphasizes written documents, such as after action reports, diaries, operational manuals, manuscripts, and essays. The majority of the material is related to the German Armed Forces during World War II.

The archive contains primarily German, American, French, and British reports that are categorized by service branches, special unit and battle studies.
