The 5th SS Panzer Division "Wiking" was organized in December 1940 as a motorized division from the "Germania" Regiment of the SS-Verfühgungs Division and two regiments of Scandinavian, Flemish, and Dutch volunteers. During the summer of 1940 the division participated in the campaign in the west and from July to December 1940 served as the occupation force in the Netherlands. From December 1940 to June 1941 the division served within Germany. The division served on the southern sector of the esatern front from June 1941 to the summer 1942, when it was transferred to the Caucasus where it was reformed as a panzer division (first designated a panzer grenadier division). In the Spring 1943 the 5th SS Panzer Division participated in the German counteroffensive between the Don and the Dnepr Rivers. The division suffered heavy losses in February 1944 when it was encircled at Korsun. From April until August 1944 the division was engaged on the central sector of the eastern front and suffered heavy losses during German counterattacks in the Warsaw sector. In December 1944 the division was transferred to Hungary where it took part in German counterattacks west of Budapest.
